How to Enhance Precision & Reliability in Pharmaceutical Processes

In the pharmaceutical industry, precision and reliability are paramount for ensuring product quality, regulatory compliance, and patient safety. Industrial sensor technology has emerged as a vital tool in achieving and maintaining these standards by providing real-time monitoring, data analysis, and control capabilities throughout the manufacturing process.

On this note, mojo4industry conducted a Digital Dialogue on “How to Enhance Precision & Reliability in Pharmaceutical Processes”. Speakers from JUMO India spoke in detail about how industrial sensor technology contributes to enhancing precision and reliability in pharmaceutical processes, ultimately improving product outcomes and operational efficiency.

Featuring:
– Prakash Rao, Director, JUMO India
– Rupesh Desale, Director, JUMO India
– Jayant Varade, Deputy Manager – Engineering, JUMO India

Moderator: Subhajit Roy, Founder Editor, mojo4industry

Rupesh Desale: Today, let’s explore how JUMO’s innovative solutions not only enhance efficiency but also revolutionize operations in the pharmaceutical sector.

In an industry where precision, reliability, and safety are crucial, technology plays a vital role. At JUMO, we understand the complex demands and challenges of the pharmaceutical landscape. For the past 75 years, we have dedicated ourselves to developing advanced sensor technology and automation solutions tailored to the unique needs of the pharma industry. This dedication is why we have over 150 active pharmaceutical customers, including OEMs and end-users. Our solutions, ranging from temperature and pressure monitoring to data acquisition and control, are designed to help pharmaceutical companies achieve higher levels of productivity and compliance.

Jayant Varade: Trust in JUMO products stems from their precision and reliability in the pharmaceutical field. The high quality of our products is a key factor that enhances customer confidence. We serve various pharmaceutical sectors, including formulation, EPA, biotechnology, solid and liquid dosages, and sterile products.

Pharmaceutical water is a critical component in manufacturing. Water for Injection (WFI) plants produce water meeting stringent quality standards for injectables, medications, sterile solutions, and other pharmaceutical products. WFI, one of the highest purity grades, must meet regulatory requirements such as those of the United States Pharmacopeia or European standards. Our temperature sensors, available with hygienic process connections and pharmaceutical-grade surface roughness, are ideal for ion exchange applications.

In distillation units, we provide temperature sensors, conductivity sensors, and pressure transducers. JUMO has recently launched an optical sterilizable duo for fermentation and bioreactors to measure dissolved oxygen in ppb and ppm ranges, available from June 2024, with digital RS485 output. For CIP and SIP solutions, JUMO offers conductivity sensors for various ranges.

Our RTDs monitor warehouse room temperatures. JUMO products come with calibration certificates, warranty certificates, inspection certificates, test certificates, invoicing, POs, MOC traceability, and surface finish declarations. JUMO has been a trusted sensor manufacturer for 75 years and is now also a systems and solution provider.

JUMO’s solutions cover the entire automation pyramid, from process level (manufacturing) to sensor and actuator level, where we have excelled for 75 years, and up to controllers and PLCs for process control. At the supervisory level, we offer JUMO Cloud, JUMO Smartware Evaluation, and SCADA. For planning and management, JUMO provides comprehensive solutions.

We supply everything from sensors to control to cloud solutions. Our PLC Veritron 500 touch comes in 7, 10, and 15-inch configurations with inbuilt HMI, supporting multiple communication protocols like Ethernet, BACnet, and PROFINET. The Veritron 500 PLC range is also available without HMI, supporting the same communication protocols and CODESYS programming, alongside multi-channel PID controllers.

Additionally, we offer wireless transmitters and receivers for our temperature sensors and pressure transmitters. Our Smartware program provides profile or process control through different stages, while Smartware Evaluation allows for extensive data recording. The Veritron 500 and 300 touch PLCs can record up to 250 signals with 8 GB memory. Smartware SCADA integrates up to 10,000 tags or process values for monitoring and control. JUMO also offers global data monitoring solutions.

With JUMO, you get a complete system supplier from sensors to monitoring, controlling, and supervisory solutions, meeting all your application needs in one place.

How is sensor technology driving the evolution towards pharma 4.0 in the pharmaceutical industry?
Rupesh: The pharmaceutical industry’s shift towards Industry 4.0 is currently in a developmental phase, and JUMO is at the forefront of this transition. For the past 75 years, sensors have been our core business. We are now integrating Industry 4.0 capabilities into all our sensors, covering parameters from basic ones like pressure and temperature to more complex analytical and humidity parameters.

Our goal is to enable these sensors to provide signals that can be digitally analyzed. However, digital and data security is a significant concern in the pharmaceutical industry. Compliance with standards such as 21 CFR for data records is essential, and some areas still need further analysis.

JUMO is leading the way with our Digiline protocol for data transfer, while also adhering to standard protocols like IO-Link.

How do you ensure that your clients’ data are not compromised by your sensors or how do you handle that?
Rupesh: As Jayant mentioned, we offer a paperless recorder that complies with FDA 21 CFR standards. These recorders are certified by agencies like TÜV for their non-tampering capabilities. They come with white papers and a TÜV certificate confirming the data cannot be altered. This ensures data integrity, maintaining accuracy and security, so the data remains unchangeable and reliable.
