India’s largest syringe manufacturer shuts factory, sounds alarm
Hindustan Syringes and Medical Devices (HMD), India’s largest manufacturer of syringes, has shut down production at its 11-acre complex in Ballabgarh-Faridabad. The decision was taken after the Haryana Pollution Control Board called for the closure of 228 units in Faridabad for air quality management.
“Today afternoon, we shut down production voluntarily at our 11-acre complex at Sector 25 Ballabgarh-Faridabad, Rajiv Nath, Managing Director, HMD informed mojo4industry on Friday.
“Now impact is zero needles production of 150 lacs needles daily and 80 lacs syringes daily! We cannot feed needles beyond 2 days buffer stock from Monday. Other factories fed by mother unit will be shut and daily 1.2 crore syringes will not be available nationally,” HMD’s MD said.
Mr. Nath urged authorities to give special consideration as being done for hospitals as healthcare service provider and specifically as they have captive piped natural gas (PNG) based power generation. He adds, “We do have standby Diesel Gensets (DG) which are hardly used as we have PNG that’s far cheaper and pollution free. We are not a polluting industry and one of our plants just got the Gold Certification for Green Building for meeting Sustainability Standards.”
