Waaree Energies power Pondicherry’s ‘first’ solar project
Waaree Energies announced commissioning of a large-scale10 MWp solar power project in Pondicherry. This first and only solar plant in the city will supply power to Pondicherry Electricity Grid and Pondicherry Electric Department. Financed by Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA), the project has installed 37,920 Waaree solar modules and EPC has been led by Waaree Energies. With an agreement under the long-term open access (LTOA) scheme, Waaree has signed a 25 year-long power purchase agreement (PPA) with Chemfab Alkalies.
Commenting on the launch, Viren Doshi, Director, Waaree Energies said, “We are honored to be partnering with the Pondicherry Energy Department and the Pondicherry Electricity Grid to enable the union territory build a solar efficient future. With India on the brink of a solar-powered revolution, this move will potentially contribute to the country’s vision of achieving 175 GW by 2022.”
The plant is expected to generate 17,500 MWh of solar electricity in a year. This will also power smaller towns and make green electricity accessible even to the remotest areas of Pondicherry. Additionally, it will make the South city carbon neutral, which will facilitate and spur continued growth among segments largely in the tourism circuit.
